Have you ever asked something in this world?
Have you ever asked how our lives start on this earth?
Have you ever asked why society is hard to change?
You are asking yourself to be a better person and grow up.
We will ask our parents and friends, but sometimes it does not answer satisfactorily. In the end, we as humans will be confused about ourselves. Furthermore, to find some information on the internet commonly is misinformation and pseudo-science. Then, how to overcome our problems?
Humans are always asking for everything in this world. Nevertheless, they mostly do not want to learn about that, even if they use dogma and culture to answer the question. Moreover, if we ask about it, they will answer, “You do need to ask about that. Everything is already to be appointed by God. Then, why do you ask about that? You have to obey the command.” In addition, the answer implicitly teaches us never to do critical thinking. No one would critically ask about everything, and they would not ask again what they want to know. In my opinion, some people cannot answer the question because:
- A lack of literacy is complex, but reading basic information is important. Nowadays, some people share their thoughts and tips on social media. One example is Medium, which gives you some free information about self-growth. Moreover, you will find new insights about the story until self-development.
- Some information is limited. Once in a while, we want to find information, but the news or research is biased. Thus, we will search for information on social media, but it is also misleading if we do not filter it.
- Use Dogma and Culture to limit our questions. Frequently, people do not want to explain why it is forbidden for our culture and religion. Moreover, they also do the command without thinking critically, “Why do I do it? Is it for the command only? Or Do I need a god?”
Everyone has a curiosity, but in some countries (specifically in Indonesia), people do not build interest. Moreover, the question is unsatisfactory when we ask what we thought people would answer. Moreover, how to find the answer that we question in our lives? Reading a book is the answer to our question, but it is not only about reading but also about finding our curiosity. The more you read, the more you feel curious about your request.
Then, how do you find your curiosity about the questions that you asked yourself?
First, find the one thing that makes you feel curious about life.
I started reading in 2021 after I did not read a book for seven years is feminism. I was curious because people always debate feminism on Twitter and Quora. Nevertheless, when searching for information on social media, I did not find the answer, which confused me about what I asked. Furthermore, I made the biggest mistake in Quora. In addition, I decided to reread a book to filter some disinformation on the Internet.
I began by reading “Muslimah yang Diperdebatkan.” by Kalis Mardiasih. Afterwards, I discovered an answer and asked what made me curious. Generally, from making a question after reading a book, you will buy another book to find the answer.
After I read “Think Again” by Adam Grant, I realized people who asked about women as a leader in Mosque was not stupid or social justice warrior. She just asked and was curious, but in Indonesia, Indonesian would think that she deviated from their faiths. It started with thinking critically about the command.
Second, to find some information that we need for self-growth.
Sometimes, we feel confused about our life. When we want to upgrade ourselves and increase our self-awareness, we do not know how to start it. The main answer is to go to a psychologist. Going to a psychologist after consultations is better; we will find what we need. One example is when you feel insecure, you will find a book about insecurities to overcome your insecurities.
Furthermore, you will know more about yourself after discovering how to overcome your problem and read a book implicitly. I also agree that reading is one of self-care. Reading a book about self-help implicitly helps you to know more about yourself. We know what we need is the best thing I ever know. In addition, when we have a problem, we know how to overcome the problem.
Third, filtering some pieces of information in our brain.
Implicitly, when we read a book, we could filter some information that we got on social media. We can decide whether the information is good, a hoax, information we do not need to read, and skimming information on social media to interact with people. On the other hand, we can quickly know that information is a hoax. Moreover, when filtering some information, we can create critical thinking to read an article or information on social media.
Reading a book is not answering your question quickly, but when building our reading habits, we will surely find the answer. Ultimately, we can criticize some articles and information on social media well. Hence, we can help everyone to tell that article is not true at all.
